Civil servants unknotted from tyranny of the tie

THE humble tie, cherished by everyone from Oscar Wilde to the men of Whitehall, faces an uncertain future after being found to be an object of discrimination in the workplace.
Matthew Thompson, an employee at a Stockport JobCentre, emerged yesterday as the unlikely champion of male liberation after an employment tribunal in Manchester ruled that he should not be forced to wear a tie.
